To celebrate the wonderful anthropological diversity of our planet on the 9th of August we celebrate World Indigenous Peoples’ Day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994.
Scattered throughout the earth there are in fact more than 5,000 communities for a total of 370 million people living in 70 countries of the world, who perpetuate ancient traditions and lifestyles, with social, cultural, economic and political characteristics distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Particularly vulnerable, these peoples often find themselves victims of the exploitation of resources for economic interests and their delicate survival balances are easily worn down by climate change and human work. We call for respect for the indigenous peoples, who are threatened in their identity and in their very existence!
