International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8, proclaimed by the UN in 1975 on the occasion of International Women’s Year. The purpose of the day is to focus attention on the value of women in caring for life, and to remember the still long road to guaranteeing women’s rights in many parts of the world.
“DigitALL: innovation and technology for gender equality” is the theme chosen by the UN to celebrate the day in line with the 67th forum of the UN commission which is taking place in New York (from 6 to 17 March 2023) focused on: “Innovation and technological change and education in the digital age to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.
We, the Missionaries of the Immaculate, wish to dedicate this day to all the women we meet in our missions who struggle every day to protect life, to raise children, to support the family. Single women, abused and raped women, women victims of discrimination in the social context in which they live, women who risk dying at birth because they were born “women”…
We also want to dedicate it to Ukrainian women who are fighting a non-violent war, to restore hope to their besieged people. Those told in the documentary Kordon, produced by Vatican Media in collaboration with Tenderstories and many others whose names we do not know. Finally, we dedicate it to the women who fight for their trampled dignity in Iraq and many other places, courageous women, martyrs.
