The World Day of Social Communications, to be held on Sunday 12 May, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, is fast approaching.
Artificial intelligence, the theme proposed by Pope Francis for the day, despite its complexity, has given rise to several initiatives around the world. The Communications Office of the Italian Episcopal Conference comments: ‘There is a need for knowledge and, therefore, awareness of issues that are not simply technical or technological. At the centre of all development is always the human person. Progress is never something on the side, but has a massive impact at the anthropological level, influencing and determining sociality. The stakes are very high. The game has just begun’. The Pontiff, in his message for World Youth Day, recalls: “It is up to man to decide whether to become food for algorithms or to nourish his own heart with freedom, without which one does not grow in wisdom”.
