Sr. Paula Kumagai in Maués – 1999

Sr. Paula Kumagai in the refectory of the nursing home Fr. Giorgio Frizzini with the tuberculosis patients she was assisting. It was 1999. She tells…

In 1979 I returned to Maués again to take up a service at the Fr. Giorgio Frizzini and accompany the communities along the rivers. The house was intended to treat tuberculosis patients who came from rural areas and from the mines.

It was a very difficult period because many of the patients could not resist tuberculosis and died. Many times they didn’t have relatives to look after them and take care of the funerals, so they were buried among the indigents.

Sr. Paola passed away on February 9, 2023, in Bragança Paulista. She has dedicated her whole life to evangelization in the Amazon among the Sateré-Mawé people, the inhabitants of the communities along the rivers and the communities of the city of Maués.
