In 2019, Pope Francis instituted the Sunday of the Word of God, setting it on the third Sunday of Ordinary Time. This day is dedicated to promoting the celebration, reflection and dissemination of the Word of God, emphasising the importance of the Word of God in the daily life of every Christian, a Word that is not confined to a book, but which always remains alive and becomes a concrete and tangible sign.

For the 6th edition, to be held on 26 January 2025, the motto chosen is “I hope in your Word” (Ps 119:74). It is a cry of hope: man, in the moment of anguish, of tribulation, of meaninglessness, cries out to God and puts all his hope in him. This year, the Sunday of the Word coincides with the Jubilee of the World of Communication, which will conclude with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Pope Francis in St Peter’s Square on 26 January.

Hope, the central theme of this Jubilee, is a living person: Christ crucified and risen. Pauline theology emphasises that Christ is our hope, a certainty that accompanies us on the journey of faith. God’s faithfulness to his promises is a recurring theme in the Bible, and this faithfulness fills us with joy and confidence.

Word of God Sunday offers us the opportunity to renew Jesus’ invitation to listen to and keep his Word, to witness hope to the world. The Word of God is not confined in a book, but is alive and tangible, and every community is called to communicate it with conviction.

A Liturgical and Pastoral Handbook is available, a help for parishes and all those who participate in the celebration of the Sunday Holy Eucharist, so that this Sunday will be lived intensively as part of the Jubilee of 2025, whose motto is “Pilgrims of Hope”.
