The context
We, the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate-PIME, have been present in Djalingo, a village in northern Cameroon, which is located 18 km from the city of Garoua, for 25 years. In 1997, the “Giuseppina Rodolfi” rehabilitation center was opened to collaborate in the care of the many disabled people in the area. The sisters offer care and education to the handicapped who come from quite distant villages in increasing numbers. Ours is the only center for the disabled in the diocese of Garoua. Even today, culture influences the work of research and care of the most marginalized. In the villages, people still believe that a child born with a handicap is a sign of a curse and for this reason, they are left to die at birth. Thanks to the missionaries and all the work of evangelization and awareness done in these 50-60 years today it can be seen that children born with disabilities in Christian families are hidden, but not killed. There is still a lot to be done to make families understand that these children, if treated immediately, can recover and have a better future.
