12 April 2025 marks International Street Children’s Day, an occasion to raise awareness of the plight of millions of children living on the streets. This day, established in 2011 by the Consortium for Street Children (CSC), arose from the need to bring to global attention the living conditions of so many invisible children who almost always live alone on the margins of society that seems to have forgotten about them. The CSC, a global network of over one hundred NGOs, launched this initiative to ensure that the rights of street children are not ignored. Every year, events and awareness-raising campaigns are organised around the world to raise awareness of the stories of these children and the challenges they face on a daily basis.
According to UNICEF, there are still millions of children between the ages of 3 and 14 living on the streets. They are often victims of poverty, family instability, violence and war, deprived of protection and access to essential services.
International Street Children’s Day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect and act by supporting initiatives that offer these children a brighter and safer future. Let us never forget that every child deserves love, protection and a chance to grow up in a safe environment.
