During this Lent, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of our missionary institute, we have chosen to make a concrete gesture of charity towards those most in need. Every Missionary Sister of the Immaculate, in every province and delegation, is committed to raising funds for the Comboni Foundation‘s ‘ALL TO SCHOOL IN THE HOLY LAND‘ project.
We have chosen to broaden our horizons beyond the needs of our Congregation, says Sr. Antonella, Congregation Leader to express “our gratitude to the Father who from the very first moments of the life of our Institute, and over these 90 years, has never ceased to show us his providential face through the closeness and solidarity of so many people and Institutions”.
The project is targeted for the Jahalin Bedouin communities of the West Bank, who come from the Tel Arad district in the Negev desert where a network of nurseries is to be established to help children overcome the difficulties they face in integrating into schools. The Foundation is accompanying 11 villages, giving priority to the education of the children, both in kindergartens and after school for those children allowed to attend government schools. The beneficiaries of the project are about 125 children, 11 educators, the Bedouin communities and the whole of society.
We are convinced, like Pope Leo XIV, that “Our love and our deepest convictions need to be continually cultivated, and we do so through our concrete actions. Remaining in the realm of ideas and theories, while failing to give them expression through frequent and practical acts of charity, will eventually cause even our most cherished hopes and aspirations to weaken and fade away. For this very reason, we Christians must not abandon almsgiving. It can be done in different ways, and surely more effectively, but it must continue to be done. It is always better at least to do something rather than nothing. Whatever form it may take, almsgiving will touch and soften our hardened hearts. It will not solve the problem of world poverty, yet it must still be carried out, with intelligence, diligence and social responsibility. For our part, we need to give alms as a way of reaching out and touching the suffering flesh of the poor”. (Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi Te, 119)
